The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly

Image
Review by: Yagyesha Roy   The main character, Calpurnia Virginia Tate (AKA Callie Vee), lives in Fentress, Texas, approximately 50 miles from Austin, the capital. (You can check if that's true, I honestly don't know, that's what they said in the book.) Callie is eleven-going-on-twelve, and worries if she is going to have to be like a "lady"- all fashionable, and doing all the tedious work that ladies do. She spends a lot of time with her grandfather, Walter Tate, and is very interested in science.   Calpurnia's a very observant girl, so she has a lot of questions about the world. Her oldest brother, Harry, gives her a notebook to write things down in but she needs someone to discuss those questions with her, and Harry won't do it. Whenever she asks him, he always tells her to go ask Grandfather. Her grandfather, Captain Tate, is a very strict and scary figure, at least to his grandchildren. After contemplating which was better (never knowing the

The Hellhound of Wall Street, by Michael Perino

Review by :Arghya Roy During the 1920's, America brushed away the effects of the Great War, and witnessed dynamic cultural change, increased awareness for the Progressive and liberal movements, and sustained economic prosperity. Labor Unions were organized, Prohibition was in full swing, and women were becoming more independent. Technology was becoming more available to the common man. The titans of American Industry lived lavish lifestyles, and the media turned it's attention towards celebrities. Population was on the rise, and the poor were taken care of by the middle-class. All of that ended with the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Millions of Americans lost their livelihoods and jobs, and were forced to live in slums. Understandably, the American public was more than angry at Wall Street and Herbert Hoover, the President at the time. President Hoover intended to be re-elected in the 1932 elections, so he assigned Senator Peter Norbeck to lead the United

Review by: Yagyesha Roy The heroine of this book is a girl named Primrose Squarp and she is residing  in British Columbia( a place I have always wanted to visit). People believe that both her parents drowned at sea, but Primrose thinks otherwise. (You know what? I think "Primrose" sounds too formal and "longish" so  I think I'll just call her Prim. Like Katniss Everdeen's sister in the Hunger Games)    Prim's father is/was a fisherman and was out at sea when a bad storm struck. He was late getting home, so her mother dropped her off at a neighbor's house and went off to the sea in a little sailboat, to search for him. She must not have been thinking straight, cause if a fishing boat wasn't coming back, how would a sailboat? They never came back, leaving the town to believe that they had drowned. (insert sad face here) Of course, no one believes Prim when she says that they are still alive. (Obviously, because then the book would

Review by :Yagyesha Roy Pearl Petal loved horses in all their forms. Horses, ponies and especially unicorns. Now that she knew they existed of course. Pearl also had a pink pair of leprechaun shoes given to her by Cobblestone the Leprechaun . He had told her that the shoes did something special. Maybe, Cobblestone was a big fat liar or in this case a little fat liar . Ben Silverstein , Pearls' friend comes over and gets a yellow hat from her house. When they reach the worm hospital, Mr.Tabby is leaving for once a year trip to the spa , and tells them a human has been sighted in the Imaginary World.Once inside, Dr. Woo calls them to the water basement where they meet  a cute but dangerous child eating kelpie (half horse , half sea serpent which can change forms too). After Ben cautiously feeds the kelpie (since kelpies have a preference for boys) , they find that the youngest unicorn in the group has gone missing.  Pearl, Ben and Dr.Woo then go to the Imaginary World

Review by:Yagyesha Roy Creak. Ben Silverstein heard a noise coming from the kitchen window. It was the middle of the night so Ben didn't really see anything but a big paw. But when he looked out the window he sees a figure that looks a lot like the dragon that lives on top of Dr. Woo's hospital. In the morning Ben's grandpa says the toaster was missing. Mrs. Mulberry calls an emergency meeting about all the missing items.  Pearl and Ben discover that the missing items were all metal. Mrs.Mulberry  then decides to take roll call. And they discovered that every one was there except Dr. Woo. The citizens of Buttonville decide that Dr. Woo is the culprit for all the missing items. Pearl and Ben hear a noise from outside and decided to check it out. Then they see that Dragon that lives that lives on top of Dr. Woo's hospital . And when they turned around they saw that Victoria Mulberry had sneaked up on them, and she too had seen the Dragon. They were doing a goo

A Confusion of Princes, by Garth Nix

Review by :Arghya Roy    This book takes place milleniums into the future, and there's an empire that controls the whole galaxy. This empire is ruled by an entity, known as the Imperial Mind (it's actually a collection of all the former princes who became emperor) and millions of cybernetic humans, called Princes. After every 20 years, 1000 prices are chosen to battle for supremacy, to be chosen to enter the Imperial Mind. Also, these Princes have 3 main types of bodily advantages over humans. Bitek (advanced biological weaponry and technology), Psitek (advanced mental weaponry and technology, and the 1 inherent skill that all princes have, and if you have more of it then other princes, then you can be an imperial candidate), and Mektek (advanced mechanical weaponry and technology). In addition to this, Princes can be reborn, if their death was a noble one, and they have priests who take care of them, and Princes can telepathically speak to them (via Psitek.) Many prin

Ender's game by Orson Scott Card

Review by : Arghya Roy The book takes place several decades into the future, on an Earth that has fought against creatures known as Formics (or 'buggers') on 2 separate occasions, known as the First and Second Formic wars. The protagonist of the book, Andrew 'Ender' Wiggin is 4 years old, when something called a monitor is put into his neck, and 2 years later, he's selected for a military academy known as 'Battle School', where kids start training at a very young age to become commanding officers of the International Fleet (IF). However, the superior officers at the school have something special planned for him, as they plan to isolate him from the rest of the cadets. The purpose of this is so that he can lead the IF in a final confrontation with the Formics, whereas previously the Formics attacked Earth, and now the IF will attack the Bugger homeworld. He's 6 years old when he starts his training, and the superior officer, Hyrum Gra
